Orbital Eccentricity Effects on the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background from Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars

چکیده
Unresolved coalescing binary neutron stars in the Galaxy and beyond produce a stochastic gravitational wave background within the LISA frequency band, which can be potentially dangerous for possible detection of fundamentally more interesting relic cosmological backgrounds. Here we address the question what effects the unavoidable eccentricity of orbits of these systems should have on the properties of this backgrounds. In particularly, we examine starting from which frequency one-year observations with LISA can be secure from contamination by the noise produced by galactic binary neutron stars in eccentric orbits. We come to the conclusion that harmonics from such binaries do not contribute significantly above ∼ 10 Hz.

Gravitational wave background from coalescing compact stars in eccentric orbits
Stochastic gravitational wave background produced by a stationary coalescing population of binary neutron stars in the Galaxy is calculated. This background is found to constitute a confusion limit within the LISA frequency band up to a limiting frequency νlim ∼ 10 −3 Hz, leaving the frequency window ∼ 10–10 Hz open for the potential detection of cosmological stochastic gravitational waves and ...

Long baseline interferometers to detect gravitational waves such as TAMA300 [1], GEO600 [2], VIRGO [3], LIGO [4] will be in operation by the end of this century or the beginning of the 21st century. One of the most important sources of gravitational waves for such detectors are coalescing binary neutron stars. PSR1913+16 is the first binary neutron stars found by Hulse and Taylor. The existence...

Gravitational wave detection experiments in space, including satellite Doppler-Tracking (Bertotti and Iess, 1999) and LISA (http://lisa.jpl.nasa.gov), will hopefully open a window on the low-frequency part of the gravitational wave (henceforth GW) spectrum of cosmic origin. In these frequency bands, binary stars are among the most promising continuous detectable source. A substantial fraction o...
متن کاملHydrodynamics of Coalescing Binary Neutron Stars: Ellipsoidal Treatment
We employ an approximate treatment of dissipative hydrodynamics in three dimensions to study the coalescence of binary neutron stars driven by the emission of gravitational waves. The stars are modeled as compressible ellipsoids obeying a polytropic equation of state; all internal fluid velocities are assumed to be linear functions of the coordinates. The hydrodynamic equations then reduce to a...

We examine the effects of spin-orbit and spin-spin coupling on the inspiral of a coalescing binary system of spinning compact objects and on the gravitational radiation emitted therefrom. Using a formalism developed by Blanchet, Damour, and Iyer, we calculate the contributions due to the spins of the bodies to the symmetric trace-free radiative multipole moments which are used to calculate the ...
